I don't see what the problem is with doing simple RPCs ofer the net. POST/GET requests with key=value pair responses seems adequate for the average function call. Maybe the return of XML makes sense for functions that return a lot of and/or complex data. Most functions don't, though. REST seems too religious and philosophical. SOAP and even XML-RPC seem over-kill. So we're left with screen-scraping. Security seems positively a non-issue since we're dealing with exact same things that CGIs do. I don't even really follow the other point in the article.
