I became a devotee of Finnish saunas in heavily Finnish-American Duluth, Minnesota when I was teaching across the river at Wisconsin State, Superior, in 1960-61.. Their operative principle is similar to that of Native sweat lodge approaches -- though without the religious/spiritual foundation and context of the latter. (H)

Jyri reports:

Hunter,
Though I don't necessarily agree with the finer details, I can't helping quoting a comment from last night on your coming presidential election from one of the regulars at the public sauna where I go here in Helsinki. "It seems they've got the choice between cholera and the plague," said a retired bricklayer and old Red with the sauna thermometer showing a nice 88 C (190 F), which is still borderline comfortable. I remember he said something similar four years ago . It led to discussion, in which I hastened to mention that there are also others tickets that people can choose for reasons of principle. Didn't convince the others too much, I'm afraid.
The sauna is a good colloquium of varying participants with their politics all across the board: the old Red, a right-wing schoolteacher, a few small businessmen, one jailbird recently released, a professor of economics and assorted self-styled thinkers, including yours truly. And chewing the rag and enjoying the heat interspersed with dips in a pool of cold water is an excellent alternative to going to a bar and drinking beer after a day's work. Occasionally one even learns something new.
Till later,
Jyri
