Hey _______:
As always, very good to hear fromyou. Your mind is as sharp and inquiring a=
s ever.
As we both know, the civil rightsmovement effected many good changes =E2=80=
=93 still, always a long way to go on allfronts, of course =E2=80=93 but it=
didn=E2=80=99t dislodge the economic royalists et al.As time passed, the o=
ld racist orthodoxy,=E2=80=9CStates Rights and Racial Integrity=E2=80=9D =
=E2=80=93 morphed into what I call =E2=80=9Cthe newmoderate orthodoxy=E2=80=
=9D.Basically, thisboils down to white-washing and =E2=80=9Csanitizing=E2=
=80=9D the old horrors. Its motives areclearly self-serving in the social a=
nd economic senses. This certainly isn=E2=80=99t as pervasive as the oldorth=
odoxy but it does its best to effectively retard and quietly block anything=
that frankly and bluntly and effectively discusses, in analytical fashion, =
thecruel realities of the old, no longer =E2=80=9Crespectable=E2=80=9D raci=
sm.It fully supports economic royalism via stategovernment and media. In pra=
cticalterms, =E2=80=9Cnothing too militant and nothing too radical.=E2=80=
=9DIt=E2=80=99s as against union labor as it=E2=80=99s alwaysbeen.
The new moderate orthodoxy is repletewith revisionism, often factually flaw=
-ridden, some of which ignores and/orsoftens the sins of commission and omi=
ssion =E2=80=93 and some of which is individuallyself-serving in the dishon=
est sense.
This isn=E2=80=99t limited to Mississippi, ofcourse.It=E2=80=99s found broa=
dly.But in the old hard-core regions of Dixie,it=E2=80=99s very pronounced.
In the Jackson situation, it=E2=80=99s nowconsidered quite OK to center on =
the violently attacked Woolworth sit-in =E2=80=93blaming that on young peop=
le while ignoring the roles of adult racistmentorsand the basic systemicori=
gins.It=E2=80=99s considered OK to elevatethe very courageous Medgar Evers =
into sainthood =E2=80=93 an unrealistic status andsomething I think honest =
Medgar would categorically reject =E2=80=93 and ignore thegreat courage of =
thousands of grassroots African Americans and their too-fewnon-black allies=
who comprised the Jackson Movement and its many highlydramatic episodes --=
and who were subjected to the most brutal and bloodyrepression found in an=
y large urban area during the great Movement epoch.=20
This recent essay of mine on Medgarand the Jackson Movement may be of inter=
est. Doesn=E2=80=99t take long to read. http://www.solidarity-us.org/site/n=
ode/3876

And, again, with no falsemodesty:My Jackson Mississippi book is extremelyde=
tailed. Flint-hard and sharp, it goes to the roots and it pulls no punches.

There are certainly many other goodbooks on other dimensions of the Movemen=
t.Most of these are written by actual participants, some by well trainedaca=
demics.
And, of course, there are a vast number of other examples in the foregoing =
context of this message of mine: Native Americans, other "minorities," wome=
n, Labor, gays -- many more.
I=E2=80=99ve probably written enough at thispoint. But I do recall fine and =
oftenabstract artists in locations such as New York and San Francisco suppo=
rting theMovement =E2=80=93 and other good movements.AndI see Art =E2=80=93=
good art -- and good Politics as natural partners. And I include writing an=
d poetry therein.
Anyway, thanks again, _____, and keepup the good work.We will certainly bei=
n contact.All best.
In Solidarity
Hunter Bear
