Weather is getting much cooler, alittle snow not far above us, but we=E2=80=
=99re heartened by the tentative long rangeweather prediction of a warmer a=
nd drier winter for these parts.Drought concerns were ended some time back =
inthe wake of unusually heavy rains =E2=80=93 which, as I noted some weeks =
ago, alsoended fire season.
While I continue to hold to WilliamJames=E2=80=99 dictum that =E2=80=9Clife=
is worth living,=E2=80=9D there isn=E2=80=99t a lot these days aboutwhich =
to be wildly heartened.The callsfor =E2=80=93 and the implementation in som=
e states =E2=80=93 re forced quarantine for health workersreturning to this=
country from West Africa, all of this flying in the face ofmedical and soc=
ial sanity, says a great deal about the multi-faceted anxiety ofmany tribut=
aries which seems increasingly pervasive in this country.It also says a gre=
at deal about politicalcowardice in some state houses.I=E2=80=99veknown man=
y liberals and some conservatives who were good on civil liberties butmany =
are not so in what they see as a crunch for their political fortunes.
I remember a cartoon I saw as anolder kid when I was going through old issu=
es of either The Masses or TheLiberator =E2=80=93 late 1910s / early =E2=80=
=9820s: an American guy was huddled in bed,covered almost totally by blanke=
ts.Thecaption was, =E2=80=9CTrotsky=E2=80=99ll get you if you don=E2=80=99t=
watch out.=E2=80=9D
Summary incarceration of anyonestrikes negative resonance in me.Aftergettin=
g via FOIA/PA, on a bunch-by-bunch basis, my often heavily redacted FBIfile=
s, I found =E2=80=93 not surprisingly =E2=80=93 that I was on two lists man=
dating immediateseizure and speedy imprisonment in the event of national em=
ergency.So were a whole lot of other people.
I am now entering my fifth year ofthe absence of any =E2=80=93 any =E2=80=
=93 active systemic lupus. (I say =E2=80=9Cactive=E2=80=9D because thedeadl=
y malady is, of course, genetic.)This, which virtually never happens, has t=
ruly astonished a number ofmedical people.And everything else isfine.The so=
metime concerns awhile backin a few quarters about my having diabetes have =
now ended in the wake ofextensive blood tests.There wereseveral efforts to =
pressure me into using insulin =E2=80=93 which I categoricallyrejected as I=
had years earlier rejected chemo drugs for lupus.Aside from an occasional =
spike in bloodsugar, I had no diabetic symptoms.Inthe past year, I have, vi=
a some rearrangement of diet, slowly lost over fortypounds =E2=80=93 down t=
o about 210 which, given my six feet stature, is my very oldnormalcy.
Saw a fine film on our Dish earlythis morning =E2=80=93Rosenstrasse (2003).=
It=E2=80=99s based on a true happening in Berlin where, early in 1943, almo=
st2000 Jewish men married to =E2=80=9CAryan=E2=80=9D wives, were rounded up=
and held in a largebuilding by that name.Many hundreds ofwives stood vigil=
outside =E2=80=93 day after day =E2=80=93 demanding their husbands andwith=
standing harassment and threats.(Brings to mind the signal role of women in=
the struggle depicted inSalt of the Earth =E2=80=93 women who took over th=
e picket line in the zinc miners=E2=80=99strike more than sixty years ago i=
n southwestern New Mexico when their husbandswere enjoined by a state court=
. That strike was essentially won.
In Rosenstrasse, all of the husbands were finallyreleased =E2=80=93 a tiny =
but bright reverse ripple in the rapid river of genocide.
