mail spying post from the NYT -- about the same time Bob Z. was posting su=
ch on the SNCC list. I posted it all widely and a friend has just responded=
. Here is an excerpt of my response to him a few minutes ago on the contemp=
orary and dismal broader picture. (Hunter Bear}

e and local =E2=80=93 surveillance mechanisms andapproaches going full stea=
m ahead in the =E2=80=9CLand of the Free.=E2=80=9DA major problem is the ve=
ry dangerous factthat these are becoming permanently institutionalized, inc=
reasingly embedded inAmerican culture.And they are refreshedperiodically wi=

.I=E2=80=99ve often posted on these things =E2=80=93 includingour own exper=
iences -- but rarely get responses. You are a very refreshingexception to t=
his relative silence.It=E2=80=99sobvious there is Fear Afoot.I give highmar=
ks to the American Civil Liberties Union, the Bill of Rights DefenseCommitt=
ee, and a few other groups =E2=80=93 and to a number of courageous individu=
als.
In a different, but related context,I wrote this yesterday morning:

utaries which seems increasingly pervasive inthis country. It also says a g=
reat deal about political cowardice . . . I=E2=80=99ve known many liberals =
and some conservatives who were good on civilliberties but a great many are=
not so in what they see as a crunch for theirpersonal well-being and polit=
ical fortunes.
Summaryincarceration of anyone strikes negative resonance in me. After gett=
ingvia FOIA/PA, on a bunch-by-bunch basis, my often heavily redacted FBI fi=
les, Ifound =E2=80=93 not surprisingly =E2=80=93 that I was on two lists ma=
ndating immediate seizureand speedy imprisonment in the event of national e=
mergency. So were awhole lot of other people.=E2=80=9D (H)
We canonly Keep Fighting.Broad awareness andtangible action re the time-hon=
ored slogan, =E2=80=9CAn Injury To One Is An Injury ToAll=E2=80=9D,remains =
as timely and timeless andurgently necessary as it did in the early, format=
ive days of the American labormovement.
