Anyreally experienced and knowledgeable activist social justice organizer i=
s awarethat he or she has a responsibility to practice and maintain non-vio=
lence and,in that context, to ethically =E2=80=93 ethically -- safeguard hu=
man life whilecontinuing the thrust of the organizational movement.This can=
require some deft maneuvering.I could provide a fair number of personalexa=
mples and, below in this post, give two dramatic ones.
While I=E2=80=99mnot known as an endorser of gubernatorial proclamations of=
=E2=80=9Cstates ofemergency=E2=80=9D and quasi martial law status, I have =
to agree, however reluctantly,with Gov Nixon=E2=80=99s action. Much of the =
town's white community isracist =E2=80=93 including much of the police forc=
e which has few black officers. Gun purchases by some Anglos have risen sha=
rply and while most of these mightbe seen as self-defense, people new to fi=
rearms can be trigger-happy. Therecent history of the aftermath of the Brow=
n killing has already been volatile.
It=E2=80=99s veryclear that the great majority of local people in Ferguson =
=E2=80=93 African Americanand otherwise =E2=80=93 are non-violent. The pote=
ntial problem would be=E2=80=9Coutsiders=E2=80=9D from St Louis and elsewhe=
re in the country =E2=80=93 including Klanelements, among others =E2=80=93 =
who are ideologically and/or emotionally prone toviolence.
The FBI,according to news releases in the past day or two, has warned polic=
edepartments throughout the country about =E2=80=9Cagitators=E2=80=9D who w=
ould seek toperpetuate violence in the wake of a grand jury decision avoidi=
ng theindictment of the police officer. One of the many problems with the F=
BIis that its definition of =E2=80=9Cagitators=E2=80=9D, of course, is alwa=
ys verybroad in nature.
But thefact does remain that Ferguson at this point is akin to very hot pin=
eneedles in a late June forest. (Hunter Bear)
Hereare a couple of genuinely dangerous situations which should be of inter=
est:
In1964-65, the United Klans of America began targeting our quite successful=
Northeastern North Carolina Black Belt Project, among other things holding =
verylarge rallies near communities with large Black populations. The goal w=
asintimidation but also to incite violence. Many local lawmen in that setti=
ngwere Klansmen or Klan sympathizers. When the first such rally wasschedule=
d, I went to the state house at Raleigh and demanded that GovSanford, no fr=
iend of ours, send sufficient numbers of state highway patrolofficers into =
those locations before, during, and after any KKKrallies. The Gov balked un=
til I said that, if this weren=E2=80=99t done, we=E2=80=99d beprepared to e=
xercise our Second Amendment rights of armed self defense. Gov Sanford then=
agreed to provide the state protection, and did. Thisestablished the patte=
rn followed soon thereafter by his successor, Gov DanMoore. For our part, a=
lthough our people kept their eyes on their nearbyguns, we successfully enc=
ouraged non-violence. These actions prevented muchviolence. http://hunterbe=

On theChicago South/Southwest side, we got along well with most minority yo=
uthgangs on our turf and one, the Disciples, took it upon itself to provide=
us with protection. Violence
pervaded that whole urban region. I and my entire staff and our local
leaders were subjected to constant death threats from white racists and
their public sector allies, our offices were set afire, there were attempte=
d
police frame-ups. Red-baiting was common, especially against me.
In the Labor Day period, 1971, after a summer of constant and oft-deadly
white violence against Black and Puerto Rican people, two young whites were
shot and killed. Immediately, the whole South/Southwest side moved to the
very brink of what could have been one of Chicago's bloodiest racialriots i=
n
history. White advocates of hatred from all over the Chicago metropolitan
area and environs poured into the setting to incite violence; on our side,t=
here were
understandably fed-up people who were moving very close to violent
retaliation. But, by that time, we had an extensive network ofblock-clubs
and other groups throughout our entire area -- with vigorously committed lo=
cal
leadership -- and good close working relationships with a number ofyounger
social-justice Catholic clergy in the white areas. Acting on ourdemand,
and with the prodding of a very decent police unit -- the Human Relations
Section of Chicago PD [understaffed and always referred to by mainline
Chicago cops as "the Black mafia" -- it was predominately Black but
interracial] -- top police officials in Chicago pulled out all the local
[hostile] police units from our smoldering turf and sent in huge numbers of
police from other parts of the city.
All of us-- staff, community leaders, grassroots people -- were in the fiel=
d.
And weworked around the clock.
Ahideously bloody catastrophe in that whole area was averted. And we kept
right on organizing and fighting. I have always believed that that wasone
of the most significant accomplishments in which I've been privileged to
play a substantive role: the Right to the Edge of Armageddon, Labor Day, '7=
1.
