Just a few commentson the Ferguson situation.
Dish Network andTurner settled their dispute a few days ago.CNN is providin=
g pretty good Ferguson coverage =E2=80=93 including coverage ofregional and=
national ramifications.
None of this wasunexpected.In fact, it was clear that,even if Wilson had be=
en indicted, there would be considerable disorder.
It=E2=80=99s sometimes been =E2=80=9Cradicalchic=E2=80=9D to characterize t=
hese violent social upheavals as =E2=80=9Crebellions.=E2=80=9DPersonally, I=
have never bought that characterization.However sociologically understanda=
ble theymay be, they =E2=80=93 violence and looting =E2=80=9Cunder color of=
anger=E2=80=9D -- are signal socialtragedies in their own right and play i=
nto the hands of racists andreactionaries.
All of theAfrican American communities -- communities -- involved in this a=
re non-violent and, with otherthoughtful people in that general setting, an=
d far and away as well, are committedto non-violence =E2=80=93 and to the u=
se of the Brown tragedy to illustrate thepresence of the broader problem of=
police =E2=80=9Cshooting first and asking questionslater.=E2=80=9D
While this lethallyprecipitous police approach is often colored by racism a=
nd affects racialminorities disproportionately, it can also affect Anglos.A=
very few years ago, here in Eastern Idaho, therewere two instances of loca=
l white men, armed to be sure, who were shot and killed bylawmen.These acti=
ons were quite questionable. Very recently a young Anglo, a resident of Sal=
t Lake, was shot and killed by SLC police.I believe he was unarmed.
While it is sometimesdifficult to sort out the facts in some of these situa=
tions, it is clear thatlaw enforcement =E2=80=9Cshoot first=E2=80=9D is inc=
reasingly taking precedence over the once much more utilized police et al.e=
fforts to =E2=80=9Ctalk down=E2=80=9D the situation peacefully.
