This has been a fine discussion onthe national peace movement, its many cha=
llenges, and its absence at thispoint.Given the rapidly expanding IraqWar a=
nd the continuation of American combat in Afghanistan, and other suchcrises=
, we can only hope and work toward an increasingly broad-based andenduring =
national peace movement..A =E2=80=9Cmobilization=E2=80=9Dnext spring, as in=
dicated by a peace spokesperson with whom Sam had dinner,does seem too far =
off.
As I indicated with my initial query,my priorities have always been Native =
rights, union labor, civil rights, civilliberties =E2=80=93 all of these un=
ranked.Ihave consistently opposed, in various ways, every US military actio=
n beginningwith Vietnam.I am most grateful for theinsights into the peace m=
ovement that this discussion is providing.
I do know a good deal about Americansocial history, including protest histo=
ry.And I do feel that the period from Wounded Knee 1973 to WTO 1999 was ana=
rid one. The great 60s Movement, which, of course, contained a number ofmov=
ements, some new and some rejuvenated by the spirit and action of thosetime=
s, and its strong afterglow into the early =E2=80=9870s, waned drastically.=
I define =E2=80=9C protest movement=E2=80=9D as a broad andtranscendent and=
visionary socialjustice force which draws from local protest sources and f=
uels new ones.=20
I have often noted that good localefforts by good individuals always contin=
ue =E2=80=93 since justice issues certainlydo.The =E2=80=9Carid epoch=E2=80=
=9D, where it was toughto grow activist efforts in significant numbers, abo=
unded with issues. Andthere was certainly some healthy activism, especially=
via the long distancetrekkers. Many of us, as always and regardless of the=
times and circumstances,were consistently involved with various justice is=
sues at local and regionallevels.(And we still are.)
But the ethereal and even militantsense of =E2=80=9CThe Movement=E2=80=9D d=
uring this drought was mostly missing.An exception could well be the Centra=
lAmerican crises and resultant activism during the Reagan reign. Peace effo=
rtsseemed minimal during the arid stretch, the civil rights movement fragme=
nted,labor unionism waned in the general sense, save for the public sectorv=
arieties.Student activism droppedsteadily.
Sam mentioned that 120,000demonstrated in a protest against nukes in NYC du=
ring that generally dry era.We read about that from North Dakota whichheld,=
at Grand Forks (where our family lived) and at Minot, the great majorityof=
this country=E2=80=99s missiles. The remainder were in eastern Montana =E2=
=80=93 close toNorth Dakota.Plenty of Nodaks andMontanans were certainly co=
ncerned about thesinister presence of =E2=80=9Chordes=E2=80=9D of nukes =E2=
=80=93 not because of fears of bombingby =E2=80=9CRed Russia=E2=80=9D =E2=
=80=93 but because of the very realistic concern of lethal tech mess-ups.An=
d there were also some strong and vitalpacifist positions.But it was veryto=
ugh, despite heroic efforts by some excellent activists, to mobilize =E2=80=
=94in enduringfashion =E2=80=93 against those monstrosities.Probably no mor=
e than a few hundred North Dakotans were really committedto doing so. (Apat=
hy and economic concerns were among the inhibiting factors). Had thisbeenth=
e =E2=80=9860s, a very large number,including a great many students, would =
have acted constructively.
Now, in the wake of the great Movementactivism of 1999 -2009, we are not ye=
t in arid country. There are still manysprings of good water around us.Thel=
egacy and after-glow of that great protest decade still providesinspiration=
and appropriate lessons.Andthe great array of issues, and most certainly t=
hose of War, pervade our humanlives globally =E2=80=93 to and from the very=
Four Directions.Each of us, in his or her own way, is morallymandated to r=
each out to others and ride hard with History toward the Sun.
