I must have missed your original query. There is no question that the peac=
e movement is far smaller than it had been early in the Iraq War. There ar=
e a multitude of reasons for its decline, one of which is the reluctance of=
many liberals and progressives to directly confront the nation's first bla=
ck president. But that is only one reason, and by no means the most import=
ant.
=20
That does not mean, however, that there is no longer a peace movement. My =
organization, U.S. Labor Against the War, has been continuously active sinc=
e its founding in January of 2003. We still work in coalition with a numbe=
r of active national antiwar organizations and networks, among which are AF=
SC, Peace Action, National Priorities Project, Win Without War, the Pentago=
n Budget Campaign, War Resisters League, Veterans for Peace, Iraq Vets Agai=
nst the War, Military Families Speak Out and others.
=20
USLAW has had no reluctance to criticize the Obama administration. Indeed,=
we just sent out an action alert condemning Obama's decision to extend com=
bat duties for the military in Afghanistan after only six months ago procla=
iming the combat role of US troops would end by year's end. http://bit.ly/=
End_Not_Extend=20
=20
But the fact is that if the antiwar movement is weaker that is because pop=
ular opposition to the wars has subsided. The 2011 withdrawal of US troops=
from Iraq, the drawdown that has been taking place in Afghanistan, the imp=
act of the recession, falling standard of living for most working people, t=
he austerity regime imposed by corporations and the Congress - all have bee=
n factors in weakening antiwar activism.

=20=20
The other day, I asked about the existence of a bona fide national peace mo=
vement. That was a reasonable inquiry, given the fact that the country is =
now well into a new and fast broadening Iraq War. It=E2=80=99s now even m=
ore timely, at this moment in history, as Obama abrogates his latest of sev=
eral pledgse to end U.S. military combat involvement in Afghanistan.
Aside from two comments on Redbadbear, which were essentially localized in =
nature, I received no responses to my query. This would seem to bear out m=
y feeling that the national peace movement ended =E2=80=93 at least for the=
time =E2=80=93 when Barack Obama took office. Certainly, there are valian=
t local efforts and a few genuinely left groups that haven=E2=80=99t been c=
o-opted by Obama and the Democratic Party.
The broad silence in this country on the peace issue is both tragic and dan=
gerous. Hopefully, that will change as matters abroad are seen as more dir=
e, U.S. military involvement is recognized as increasingly futile =E2=80=93=
and the fiscal expenditures for the Wars rival the heights of the Rockies.
A very personal observation: I came of radical age in early 1955. Even wi=
th Red Scare fear and hysteria raging across this country, there was more g=
enuinely radical activism =E2=80=93 =E2=80=9Cto the roots=E2=80=9D stuff =
=E2=80=93 than the oft empty verbal militancy of today and the even more pe=
rvasive silence.
