I must have missed your original query. There is no question that the peace=
movement is far smaller than it had been early in the Iraq War. There are =
a multitude of reasons for its decline, one of which is the reluctance of m=
any liberals and progressives to directly confront the nation's first black=
president. But that is only one reason, and by no means the most important=
.
That does not mean, however, that there is no longer a peace movement. My o=
rganization, U.S. Labor Against the War, has been continuously active since=
its founding in January of 2003. We still work in coalition with a number =
of active national antiwar organizations and networks, among which are AFSC=
, Peace Action, National Priorities Project, Win Without War, the Pentagon =
Budget Campaign, War Resisters League, Veterans for Peace, Iraq Vets Agains=
t the War, Military Families Speak Out and others.
USLAW has had no reluctance to criticize the Obama administration. Indeed, =
we just sent out an action alert condemning Obama's decision to extend comb=
at duties for the military in Afghanistan after only six months ago proclai=
ming the combat role of US troops would end by year's end. http://bit.ly/En=
d_Not_Extend
But the fact is that if the antiwar movement is weaker that is because pop=
ular opposition to the wars has subsided. The 2011 withdrawal of US troops =
from Iraq, the drawdown that has been taking place in Afghanistan, the impa=
ct of the recession, falling standard of living for most working people, th=
e austerity regime imposed by corporations and the Congress - all have been=
factors in weakening antiwar activism.
In solidarity,
Michael Eisenscher
USLAW National Coordinator

Subject: My query on the national peace movement
The other day, I asked about the existence of a bona fide national peace mo=
vement. That was a reasonable inquiry, given the fact that the country is no=
w well into a new and fast broadening Iraq War.It=E2=80=99s now even more t=
imely, at this moment in history, as Obama abrogates his latest of several =
pledgse to end U.S. military combat involvement in Afghanistan.
Aside from two comments on Redbadbear, which were essentially localized in =
nature, I received no responses to my query. This would seem to bear out my =
feeling that the national peace movement ended =E2=80=93 at least for the t=
ime =E2=80=93 when Barack Obama took office.Certainly, there are valiant lo=
cal efforts and a few genuinely left groups that haven=E2=80=99t been co-op=
ted by Obama and the Democratic Party.
The broad silence in this country on the peace issue is both tragic and dan=
gerous.Hopefully, that will change as matters abroad are seen as more dire,=
U.S. military involvement is recognized as increasingly futile =E2=80=93 a=
nd the fiscal expenditures for the Wars rival the heights of the Rockies.
A very personal observation:I came of radical age in early 1955.Even with R=
ed Scare fear and hysteria raging across this country, there was more genui=
nely radical activism =E2=80=93 =E2=80=9Cto the roots=E2=80=9D stuff =E2=80=
=93 than the oft empty verbal militancy of today and the even more pervasiv=
e silence.
