It wa= s not much snow, though. Today at the Walmart action near us, it was about= 35 degrees, but with a raw and miserable wind. I have lived in Los ang, where it never snowed but where we could see snow = covered mountains much of the year; in Massachusetts and Michigan, where sn= ow and cold fill the winters; and Washington, DC, where snow shuts everythi= ng down. For years, before they moved it, I spent martin Luther king weekends on cap= e may at a poetry workshop and loved getting up at six a.m. And walking on = the beach with the shore winds and the waves freezing their tops into blowi= ng spume. It helped me write lots of good poems. I travel a lot. In Kyiv and Saint Petersburg, snow and cold winter abound. = In Athens, winter can get kind of cold, but nothing like here. And I hate = to go to buenos aires in January or February because it is much too hot. Climate change will make it all worse. Though 7,000 feet above sea level, there are l= ower regions nearby, and the Sun shines for significant periods throughout = the day. Snow can be moderately heavy but it really isn=E2=80=99t that cold= .<span> </span>On snow removal from roads, the Navajo Way is, reasonably e= nough, =E2=80=9Cjust let it melt=E2=80=9D =E2=80=93 which happens fairly fa= st.</font></span></b></p> =20=20=20=20=20 <font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3"> </font> <p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">= <font face=3D"Calibri">North Dakota=E2=80=99s winters, frankly, are the pit= s.<span> </span>Long in duration, usually lots and lots of snow, frequentl= y high winds, often brutally cold =E2=80=93 sometimes reaching 25 or 30 or = even 35 degrees below zero =E2=80=93 with very high wind chills, sometimes = pushing things to 100 below.<span> </span>The last winter we were there, 1= 996-97, was the worst of our 16 Dakota winters.<span> </span>Extraordinari= ly cold, most of the time accompanied by high winds, there were a dozen bli= zzards, mountains of snow =E2=80=93 all of this capped off by a devastating= ice storm.<span> </span>When all of this finally began to melt in April = =E2=80=9997, the Great Flood came which wrecked most of Grand Forks and for= ced almost all of its 50,000 plus residents far into the hinterland.<span> = </span>We, ourselves, escaped that disaster since, a few years before, I h= ad had strong and recurring feelings of Red River disaster, even though our= home in town was in an ostensibly =E2=80=9Cflood-safe=E2=80=9D zone.<span>= </span>We moved well to the west of Grand Forks and the Flood missed us b= y only 300 yards.<span> </span>And then we came to the Idaho mountains and= our present =E2=80=98way far up home.<span> </span>If it floods up here, = well =E2=80=93 the whole wide world will be gone.</font></span></b></p> =20=20=20=20=20 <font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3"> </font> <p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">= <font face=3D"Calibri">Through all of these situations and others I haven= =E2=80=99t mentioned, I=E2=80=99ve been really no stranger where snow alone= is involved.<span> </span>I grew up at Flagstaff, Arizona, where the alti= tude is 7,000 feet and the mountains go up to 13,000.<span> </span>There c= an be lots of snow at Flag, though there=E2=80=99s not much wind, and the S= un emerges for at least short periods each day.<span> </span>Temps are rea= sonable and it=E2=80=99s unusual to go <span> </span>even ten below at nigh= ts.<span> </span>Much lower elevations and somewhat warmer and drier clime= s are less than 50 miles away.</font></span></b></p> =20=20=20=20=20 <font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3"> </font> <p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">= <font face=3D"Calibri">But the winter of 1948-49 was where I cut my teeth w= hen it came to snow.<span> </span>Seventeen feet fell within a month.<span= > </span>At that time, we lived in what was called Sunnyside, a mile and m= ore east of Flagstaff proper. Or, often I=E2=80=99d travel via my Bear Paw snowshoes= , across the then open mesa just to the west of our modest home, and into F= lagstaff that way.</font></span></b></p> =20=20=20=20=20 <font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3"> </font> <p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"font-size: 12pt;">= <font face=3D"Calibri">I was big even in my early =E2=80=98teens. Though 7,000 feet above sea level, = there are lower regions nearby, and the Sun shines for significant periods = throughout the day. Snow can be moderately heavy but it really isn=E2=80=99= t that cold.<span> </span>On snow removal from roads, the Navajo Way = is, reasonably enough, =E2=80=9Cjust let it melt=E2=80=9D =E2=80=93 which h= appens fairly fast.</font></span></b></p> <div> <font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3"> </font> </div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"font-size: 1= 2pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">North Dakota=E2=80=99s winters, frankly, are t= he pits.<span> </span>Long in duration, usually lots and lots of snow= , frequently high winds, often brutally cold =E2=80=93 sometimes reaching 2= 5 or 30 or even 35 degrees below zero =E2=80=93 with very high wind chills,= sometimes pushing things to 100 below.<span> </span>The last winter = we were there, 1996-97, was the worst of our 16 Dakota winters.<span> = </span>Extraordinarily cold, most of the time accompanied by high winds, t= here were a dozen blizzards, mountains of snow =E2=80=93 all of this capped= off by a devastating ice storm.<span> </span>When all of this finall= y began to melt in April =E2=80=9997, the Great Flood came which wrecked mo= st of Grand Forks and forced almost all of its 50,000 plus residents far in= to the hinterland.<span> </span>We, ourselves, escaped that disaster = since, a few years before, I had had strong and recurring feelings of Red R= iver disaster, even though our home in town was in an ostensibly =E2=80=9Cf= lood-safe=E2=80=9D zone.<span> </span>We moved well to the west of Gr= and Forks and the Flood missed us by only 300 yards.<span> </span>And= then we came to the Idaho mountains and our present =E2=80=98way far up ho= me.<span> </span>If it floods up here, well =E2=80=93 the whole wide = world will be gone.</font></span></b></p> <div> <font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3"> </font> </div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"font-size: 1= 2pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">Through all of these situations and others I h= aven=E2=80=99t mentioned, I=E2=80=99ve been really no stranger where snow a= lone is involved.<span> </span>I grew up at Flagstaff, Arizona, where= the altitude is 7,000 feet and the mountains go up to 13,000.<span> = </span>There can be lots of snow at Flag, though there=E2=80=99s not much w= ind, and the Sun emerges for at least short periods each day.<span> <= /span>Temps are reasonable and it=E2=80=99s unusual to go <span> </spa= n>even ten below at nights.<span> </span>Much lower elevations and so= mewhat warmer and drier climes are less than 50 miles away.</font></span></= b></p> <div> <font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3"> </font> </div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"font-size: 1= 2pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">But the winter of 1948-49 was where I cut my t= eeth when it came to snow.<span> </span>Seventeen feet fell within a = month.<span> </span>At that time, we lived in what was called Sunnysi= de, a mile and more east of Flagstaff proper. (Now it=E2=80=99s called East= Flagstaff.)<span> </span>It was an<span> </span>unincorporated= sprawl built in helter-skelter fashion in an old pinto bean field.<span>&n= bsp; </span>It held a very, very diverse and interesting population includi= ng many Dust Bowl refugees. Great diversity in home styles, including a few= big tents, graced the scene.<span> </span>During that winter, school= s in Flag =E2=80=93 where we went =E2=80=93 were frequently closed and the = Santa Fe sometimes couldn=E2=80=99t =E2=80=9Cget up the mountain=E2=80=9D t= o us and thus to anywhere beyond us.</font></span></b></p> <div> <font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3"> </font> </div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"font-size: 1= 2pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">Sometimes I trekked into Flagstaff along a the= n empty mile or so of Highway 66 =E2=80=93 which was, before the Interstate= , the main street of town. Or, often I=E2=80=99d travel via my Bear Paw sno= wshoes, across the then open mesa just to the west of our modest home, and = into Flagstaff that way.</font></span></b></p> <div> <font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3"> </font> </div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"font-size: 1= 2pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">I was big even in my early =E2=80=98teens. My = basic job that winter was shoveling out our long driveway at <span> </= span>dawn, each and every morning.<span> </span>I did that faithfully= and well.<span> </span>Snow thus mounted higher and higher along the= sides.<span> </span>In February, =E2=80=9949, a good friend, Juan Ca= rillo, came from Laguna Pueblo, in west central New Mexico, to see us.<span= > </span>He was<span> </span>half Mescalero Apache and half Spa= nish.<span> </span>His mother was Geronimo=E2=80=99s sister and his f= ather, directly from Spain, was a rancher in the southern part of New Mexic= o.<span> </span>Juan Carillo, as a very young boy, was sent to Laguna= Pueblo for his personal safety owing to the widespread Anglo hatred agains= t any of his uncle=E2=80=99s kin.<span> </span>He grew up at Laguna, = married into the tribe, and became the chief hunter for its influential Eag= le Clan.<span> </span>My father had earlier painted his portrait in o= ils, as he had that of Eli Beardsly, a key Laguna leader and elder, who res= ided, with his Seneca wife at the Seama village of the Pueblo.
