Dear Hunter,
Agreed: kudos to Obama, the Castro brothers, and by no means least Pope Fra=
ncis. A welcome infusion of sanity to a totally bizarre situation.
I would wager, though, that there are other agendas at work, perhaps more a=
long the lines of economic realism. I came across the following article in =
HuffPost by the former Mexican foreign minister. Despite his unabashedly an=
ti-socialist and anti-Castro bent, I think it=E2=80=99s still worth taking =
a look at. At any rate it=E2=80=99s a bit more intelligent than the anti-Cu=
ban rants of some American, and other, circles:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jorge-castaaeda-/venezuela-oil-cuba-us-deal_b=
_6348824.html?utm_hp_ref=3Dworld&utm_hp_ref=3Dworld

Despite the problems of the economy, there=E2=80=99s no denying the achieve=
ments of Cuba in literacy, education and health care and other areas of soc=
ial policies =E2=80=93 all this was explained to me years ago by a =C3=A9mi=
gr=C3=A9 Cuban friend of mine who settled in Finland via the US, and for re=
asons former (nationalized) wealth and class (he could use the title of don=
if he chose to) that guy was not exactly a friend of the Revolution in oth=
er respects. Actually I was more convinced by him of the good points than b=
y the official Cuban propaganda.=20
I remember, though, his comment on the Brigadas Nordicas Cuba-solidarity gr=
oups of young people here and elsewhere in Scandinavia back in the 70s and =
80s who paid to travel out to Cuba and join in programs of volunteers in ag=
ricultural and building projects (one of my cousins took part). He said: =
=E2=80=9CFidel is a genius. He gets these idiots from Finland and Sweden to=
go out there and cut cane in the blistering heat with no former experience=
and to pay for the pleasure. Don=E2=80=99t tell me Cubans are stupid!=E2=
=80=9D

Best wishes to you and yours,

Three days to the Winter Solstice!

Jyri
