elations.=C2=A0 =C2=A0On this day, our three brothers, Gerardo, Antonio, an=
dRam=C3=B3n, were released from US prisons after more than 16 years of unju=
stincarceration.=C2=A0 They were reunited intheir homeland with their famil=
ies, with their comrades, Ren=C3=A9 and Fernando, andwith the people of Cub=
a, who have been engaged in an unwavering struggle fortheir freedom since 1=
998.=C2=A0 =C2=A0On this day, too, President Obama announced some of the mo=
stsignificant changes in US policy toward Cuba since diplomatic ties were b=
rokenin 1961, two years after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution.=C2=A0 Th=
ese changes are to include the restorationof diplomatic relations between o=
ur two countries, further loosening of the banon travel to Cuba from the US=
, easing of trade and financial restrictions, andincreased cooperation in t=
he fields of health care, disaster response, andtelecommunications, among o=
thers.=C2=A0The Venceremos Brigade proudly stands with people ofconscience =
all across the world in celebrating this historic victory for theCuban peop=
le and the international solidarity movement.=C2=A0The release of the remai=
ning members of the Cuban 5 is atestament to the heroic strength of each on=
e of these men and to the collectiveresistance of the Cuban people and thei=
r government.=C2=A0 It affirms what we have maintained since ourbrothers we=
re arrested: that theirs was a political case determined bypolitical factor=
s; that they were political prisoners; and that a solutionwould only be mot=
ivated by political calculations.=C2=A0 Indeed, this is, above all, a polit=
ical victory, won through years oftireless struggle in all corners of the g=
lobe=E2=80=94a victory made possible bysolidarity.=C2=A0 =C2=A0Likewise, th=
e move toward normalization of relations betweenthe US and Cuba represents =
a momentous political victory for the Cuban people,their revolution, and th=
eir allies.=C2=A0 Overmore than 50 years, Cuba has built and successfully d=
efended its revolutionagainst relentless aggression from the US government.=
=C2=A0 Facing the most powerful enemy on the planet,the people of Cuba have=
waged a battle of ideas and demonstrated through unity,discipline, and sac=
rifice that even a poor country burdened by an inhumaneblockade can feed, c=
lothe, and house all its people, provide them with anadequate and equitable=
education, and share their resources with those in needaround the world.=
=C2=A0 The policy changesannounced by Obama, though not framed this way in =
the US media, must be seen asan admission of Cuba=E2=80=99s success and pro=
of that another world is not onlypossible, but exists.=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=
=A0 =C2=A0On December 17, alongside our Cuban friends, vencimos=E2=80=94we =
overcame.=C2=A0 But our work is not done.=C2=A0 While we applaud President =
Obama=E2=80=99s decision,we know there is still much to overcome.=C2=A0The =
travel ban and blockade arestill in place.=C2=A0 Obama may do allthat he ca=
n to relax travel and trade restrictions, but Congress must be madeto act i=
n order to fully normalize US-Cuba relations.=C2=A0 This is a time for cele=
bration, but also atime for analysis, vigilance, and action.=C2=A0We must n=
ot be complacent in our success; rather, we must use the energyfrom this vi=
ctory to redouble our efforts toward the complete lifting of thecriminal bl=
ockade and unconstitutional travel restrictions.=C2=A0 As members in the va=
nguard of the internationalmovement in solidarity with Cuba, it is our duty=
to keep the pressure on=E2=80=94to continue, as we have for 45 years, tode=
fend Cuba=E2=80=99s national sovereignty and right to self-determination, a=
nd totrust that the Cuban people will do the rest.=C2=A0Today, this mission=
isas important as ever.=C2=A0 As masses ofpeople are rising up against rac=
ist state terror and proclaiming that BlackLives Matter, it is imperative t=
hat we lift up Cuba as an alternative model ofsocial development based on t=
he principles of equality and solidarity.=C2=A0 We must draw the connection=
s between thestruggle to affirm the value of black life and the struggle to=
defend arevolutionary society from attack by the same forces responsible f=
or the deathsof Mike Brown, Aiyana Stanley-Jones, Eric Garner, Tarika Wilso=
n, and many, manymore.=C2=A0 We must understand and learn fromCuba=E2=80=99=
s great victory not only in terms of its overcoming US imperialism, butalso=
=E2=80=94and especially in this moment=E2=80=94in terms of its historic com=
mitment toracial justice and international unity.=C2=A0We must remember Cub=
a=E2=80=99s decisive contributions to the movements forAfrican liberation, =
Cuba=E2=80=99s leading role in battling Ebola in West Africa, andCuba=E2=80=
=99s principled decision to grant political asylum to Assata Shakur.=C2=A0 =
Now more than ever, when we assert Cuba=E2=80=99ssovereignty and right to n=
ational self-determination, we defend this past,present, and future.=C2=A0 =
