een up even more, given Eldri=E2=80=99sstill quite precarious health situat=
ion.That=E2=80=99s coming along, but slowly.We haven=E2=80=99t had any know=
n visitations fromhostile humans for a very long time.It=E2=80=99sclear tha=
t our postal mail continues to be monitored for reasons far beyond anyratio=
nal ken.
Personally, I=E2=80=99ve found the flap aboutThe Interview film, despite th=
e genuinely serious nature of cyber attacks, tobe one of the funnier things=
 I=E2=80=99ve encountered for a long time.The story,as journalists are pron=
e to put it, would seem to lie not with what=E2=80=99svery likely a rather =
mediocre flick, but very much with the kaleidoscopic whirlof charges and co=
unter charges as to who or what is sending invisiblemalevolence through spa=
ce and threatening much more of such.The professions of free speech belief =
and satisfaction with the decisionto show the film in at least some theatre=
s is interesting, given the historiesof some of the professing folks.
If it=E2=80=99s fashionable for manyostensible liberals, especially those i=
n big urban settings, toreact to religion with a kind of tolerance atbest o=
r, often, hostile criticism, this can be especially true when the churchis =
Mormon-- even though the =E2=80=9Chostiles=E2=80=9Dknow little or nothing a=
boutthatrapidly expanding faith.Mormonism grewout of New England utopian/co=
mmunalistic traditions and its prime mover, thesoon to be martyred Joseph S=
mith, openly encouraged Blacks to join the newmovement on a fully egalitari=
an basis.
After the murder of Joseph Smith andhis brother by non-Mormon bigots, the i=
nitial, proportional presence of a largenumber of Missourians in the church=
, led to a kind of partial side-lining ofits not then large Black membershi=
p.This immediately engendered continuing controversy which was finallyresol=
ved about 40 years ago when all barriers to Black participation were remove=
d.Since then, Black membership in LDS has increased very significantly.
The old communalism still exists in someareas but Mormonism could be best d=
escribed today as stronglycommunitarian.Here is a common placeexample:
To youngest daughter, Josie, who withher own little family, is LDS, I said =
yesterday, =E2=80=9CI gather the Angel Moronipaid a visit to your home the =
other night.=E2=80=9DActually, Moroni=E2=80=99s important rolein the LDS fa=
ith lies in some other areas but it=E2=80=99s OK for a non-Mormon, such asm=
yself, to engage in a little loose and friendly symbolism.
Josie=E2=80=99s spouse, Cameron, is anextremely hardworking guy, a Master e=
lectrician who maintains his IBEWmembership.The fact that he=E2=80=99s figh=
tingMS can only heighten and broaden respect for him.He has his own small b=
usiness, and lots of quitesatisfied customers, but too many are =E2=80=98wa=
y too slow in paying him.Upshot, Josie and Cameron and the three verylittle=
 boys, faced a lean Christmas.Along with family of his, we helped out to so=
me extent but there was abig gap to fill.
Then there came a knock on their doorSaturday night.Members of their church=
ward were there with boxes and boxes of food and household supplies and som=
etoys for the kids.The ward Bishop =E2=80=93local leader -- promised to cov=
er all of their bills for a month, includingtheir mortgage payment.
This is not unusual.It should be mentionedthat Cameron=E2=80=99s grandfathe=
r, Lin Whitworth, aveteran railroad unionist and Democratic leader, and oth=
er family members, puton two huge feeds each and every year =E2=80=93 open =
to all =E2=80=93 on Thanksgiving andChristmas.
That=E2=80=99s all true communitarianism.
The polygamist Mormons, with whom Ihave had some friendly contact, are Morm=
on fundamentalists who are not embracedby the official LDS church. Communal=
ism in the classic sense is common in thosemostly isolated rural settings. =
Over the now many generations since the schism,the polygamist societies hav=
e developed into quasi-tribal entities.And they=E2=80=99re certainly good f=
olks, too.
Last, but certainly not least, aNative man active in the anti-racism campai=
gns in South Dakota, was shot andkilled the other night by a lawman who cla=
imed the victim was carrying aknife.As I=E2=80=99ve noted, these lethalsitu=
ations involving Indians and Chicanos rarely make the national news.http://=
