story is completely silly, but at any rate it has an eye-catching headline=

As far as I=E2=80=99m concerned, Churchill is not quite the saint he=E2=80=
=99s been made out to be. According to one often repeated conspiracy theory=
key items of his correspondence with Mussolini have conveniently disappear=
ed and that Mussolini=E2=80=99s execution was in fact organized by British =
agents, with the partisans only pulling the trigger.
Russia seems to be emerging better than expected from the recent turmoil, b=
ut it=E2=80=99s still touch and go. Our Russian regulars at the public saun=
a are interesting characters, one of them a veteran of the Soviets=E2=80=99=
Afghanistan War, another one a younger guy (=E2=80=9Cformer special forces=
, can=E2=80=99t say more=E2=80=9D), anti-Putin but with some obvious nostal=
gia for some things about the old Soviet Union. They arranged their by now =
traditional yearly =E2=80=9Cfriendship of the peoples=E2=80=9D event, i.e. =
serving the rest of us regulars and themselves vodka and Russian style hors=
=E2=80=99d=E2=80=99oeuvres about half an hour before the place closed for t=
he Christmas break. It=E2=80=99s totally forbidden to drink, much less serv=
e, alcohol on the premises, but once a year the staff look the other way, a=
nd we manage to raise a toast or two to peace, friendship, the brotherhood =
of men sweating in hot saunas and other worthy causes while enjoying salted=
fish, pickles, excellent dark bread, and other delicacies.
We=E2=80=99re off to the country place on Tuesday for New Year=E2=80=99s an=
d the rest of the week. I drove out there early this morning to switch the =
heating on. =E2=80=9310 C, about 4 inches of snow, not much, but the lake i=
s frozen over. People tell me it would be more sensible to install a cellph=
one-operated remote control unit for the heating, but I like to go out ther=
e myself and leave tyre-tracks and footprints in the snow to show any uninv=
ited visitors that the place is not deserted. This morning there were lots =
of white-tail deer tracks near the house along with the tracks of fox and e=
ver-presebt hare. The locals still haven=E2=80=99t managed to cull the deer=
herd at our end of the island. It=E2=80=99s obviously grown too large for =
the area and they don=E2=80=99t seem to be going anywhere. As I=E2=80=99ve =
mentioned before, white-tail deer is not native to Finland having been impo=
rted in the =E2=80=9830s from North America to a manor in South Finland . T=
he present stock of some 30,000 are descendants of the original 5 or 6 impo=
rted animals.
