This is a true horror story in everysense .From the NYT, it=E2=80=99sentitl=
ed:=E2=80=9CIn North Dakota where oil, corruption, and bodies surface.=E2=80=
=9D
The long article is very well done, accompanied by excellent photos.Thefocus=
of the piece involves the effects of the great Oil Boom on the ThreeAffili=
ated Tribes (Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara) based on the Fort Bertholdreservatio=
n in west central North Dakota.
Eldri and I have strong frontierroots in the state. In my case, on mymother=
=E2=80=99s side, they go way back into the very early Territorial period. In=
Eldri=E2=80=99s, a major branch of her family camesoon after statehood (18=
89).We lived inNorth Dakota for 16 years, just before we came here to Idaho=
and for the first13 of those years, I was a professor at University of Nor=
th Dakota =E2=80=93 American IndianStudies and Honors.
We are quite familiar with the stateand, despite the Oil Boom Frankenstein =
=E2=80=93 which affects a great many people inaddition to those at Fort Ber=
thold =E2=80=93 we see it as retaining most of itsfriendly and decent chara=
cter.
But the Oil Boom threatens people andit also threatens the Earth itself.
All of the Native names in thearticle are quite familiar to me.Somelike Lis=
a Yellowbird and Mark Fox (the incoming reform tribal chair), I knewwhen th=
ey were students.Other names arerelatives of former students of mine.
Tex Hall, who figures prominently inthe story, is the former tribal chair, =
under whose aegis much that was not goodtranspired. We met each other just o=
nce,in 1992, well before his rise to power (and now his fall). It was a mee=
ting where strong mutual warinesswas obvious to both of us.Here is theLink =
