Attorney Tom Watkins, in private practice, was Mississippi's primary anti-c=
ivil rights attorney in the Old Days -- even more so than the state AG. Smo=
oth, polished, genteel, and sharp as a fish-knife, he was a major adversary=
with whom we and our lawyers often clashed in court. (Among a number of th=
ings, he personally prepared the very creative and sweeping injunction -- C=
ity of Jackson v John R Salter, Jr -- which we defied.) I recall when he gr=
aciously held the door open into racist Judge Harold Cox's Federal courtroo=
m for us on January 12 1963 -- Eldri and me, and four black Tougaloo studen=
ts. Beba may recall that, when we were at Mississippi State Department of A=
rchives and History many years later , we learned that Tom Watkins had been=
totally immoblized by a stroke but his mind was OK. If I could have helped=
him, I would've. As it was, I conveyed our very best wishes to him via a s=
taffer of Archives who was on his way over to interview him on a historical=
 matter.
His daughter broke with family tradition and went off to Florida with a Jew=
ish civil rights lawyer. She wrote a book recently. These Q & A with her --=
a two set combo -- provide many fascinating insights into the status and r=
oles of various family members -- including women -- in "upper strata" whit=
e Mississippi.
