I am posting this on our discussionlists where posts seem at a premium thes=
e days =E2=80=93 reminiscent of a livestockranch or wheat field in Kansas o=
r Oklahoma in the wake of drought-driven duststorms.
Very recently, I guided via e-mail, ayoung radical in Seattle to the site o=
f the old Wobbly Hall of 1955.I sent something of the correspondence toStep=
hen Harvey, of near Vancouver, B.C. and a member of the Sycamore list.I was=
able to get the young man to thehistorical site with little difficulty.I e=
xplained to him in our correspondence that, having spent a lot of timein We=
stern wilderness areas, I use physical =E2=80=93 geographical -- landmarks =
as myguide, foregoing maps and compass and such.In a city, I use physical l=
andmarks such as buildings, bridges,railroads and the like.I only usenumeri=
cal addresses if I am looking for a specific individual.
Anyway, Stephen sent this to me offlist the other day.My response follows.
Sorry, Hunter, I forgot toreply sooner. thanks very much for sharing this c=
orrespondence with me.Always astounded at the rich treasure trove of memori=
es you possess. I'd liketo see the photos if you get any.
By the way, I'm currently reading "The Man Who Never Died" by WilliamM. Adl=
er - a very good biography of Joe Hill, which my elder daughter gave mefor =
Christmas. i came upon this line in the chapter on the San Diego freespeech=
fight:
"A correspondent named Stumpy wrote of the vigilance committee, 'The jailsa=
re full, but they seem to think there is plenty of room in thecemetery.'"
Would this be your friend and mentor Stumpy Payne?

hoto.But it=E2=80=99s too big =E2=80=93 unless you know the building in whi=
ch the hall waslocated.I do know it and that is, viaspecific appearance and=
location, as well as =E2=80=9Cfeeling=E2=80=9D, very definitely theplace.
In all great/great probability, theman called =E2=80=9CStumpy=E2=80=9D in t=
he new Joe Hill book is C.E. =E2=80=9CStumpy=E2=80=9D Payne =E2=80=93 who I=
knew well when I was 21 and he was reaching to 90.The =E2=80=9Chandle=E2=80=
=9D Stumpy refers to =E2=80=9Cstump speaking=E2=80=9Din the lumber country =
or on a soapbox in an urban setting.Stumpy Payne, in his earlier years, was=
agreat traveling agitator in the Far West.
Stumpy also sent in news reports tothe Wobbly press throughout his life and=
occasionally served as an editor.

The Seattle Wobbly Hall back in =E2=80=9Cmyday=E2=80=9D was a fascinating p=
lace.I rememberan old roll-top desk, various tables on which many old timer=
s played cribbageand visited. As I=E2=80=99ve noted, they took to me as qui=
ckly as I to them =E2=80=93 and weremost generous with their rich stories o=
f struggle and their analyses of thecontemporary labor scene. Younger membe=
rs came in as work schedules permitted.Young or old, the Wobbly lexicon was=
American=E2=80=93 not at all =E2=80=9CEuropean ideological. =E2=80=9D Ther=
e was always acoffee pot and sometimes a stew pot with lots of meat and pot=
atoes.On the wall hung, in iconic fashion, thephotos of the three well know=
n martyrs:Joe Hill, Frank Little (Cherokee metal miner), Wesley Everest (WW=
I vetand lumber worker.}
The hall was full of books, severalhundred =E2=80=93 almost all =E2=80=9Cra=
dical=E2=80=9D in nature.I read a number of them.One wasthe battered copy o=
f Bill Haywood=E2=80=99s Book (this was before the reprintsthankfully began=
.)When I finally gothome to Flagstaff, my parents found a good used copy fo=
r me viaa used bookstore listed in the AtlanticMonthly.
Another was a version of the ancientlegend (ca. 1200s) of the Wandering Jew=
=E2=80=93 the man who mocked Christ during theCrucifixion and was doomed t=
o eternal wandering from that point on =E2=80=93 at leastuntil the Second C=
oming.
Interestingly, both books concludewith the central character in the presenc=
e of Lenin.
The new book you have on Joe Hill =E2=80=93 The Man WhoNever Died =E2=80=93=
sounds very promising, Stephen.I will keep an eye open for it.There is a m=
uch older book, 1954, with the same title.Author is Barrie Stavis.It has a =
solid dimension of text but isprimarily a good play script about Joe Hill.P=
hotos are quite good.I picked upmy copy at the Seattle Wobbly Hall for abou=
t three dollars.Some years later, a well established NewJersey lawyer of le=
ftist inclinations, Morton Stavis, was a signal asset forthe Southern Movem=
ent and then for civil liberties in general.He helped us much.Turned out th=
at he was Barrie Stavis=E2=80=99 brother.As I recall, Morty was pleasantly =
surprised that I had a copy of hisbrother=E2=80=99s book.
