Yesterday, the Clarion Ledger,Jackson, reprinted a small portion of my piec=
e.That=E2=80=99s pleasantly intriguing.
Some days ago, Susan also posted anearlier piece of mine dealing with somet=
hing of my pre-civil rights movementactivist history. I joined that with my=
thoughts on significant revisionism and=E2=80=9Csanitizing=E2=80=9D Moveme=
nt history -- withespecial regard to Selma and Jackson.That has been around=
but may have been missed=E2=80=93 and it, too, is going to new people.Afte=
r my shots at revisionism, I give the link to her blog post on myown histor=
y of yore and some fascinating people and issues, mostly late =E2=80=9850sa=
nd 1960-61.

This of mine here could be, Isuppose, aptly described as an =E2=80=9Corgani=
zed mix=E2=80=9D-- sort of similar in diversity to a well known cowboy dish=
in NorthernArizona, containing, among other things, some cattle innards.It=

=80=99t think too much about some of thecontents, it is tasty.
I would be greatly remiss if I didn=E2=80=99texpress much sympathy for thos=
e in the East presently burdened by the veryheavy snow.It=E2=80=99s even pr=
oved challengingto Maine Indian kin of mine =E2=80=93 and that says a lot a=
bout it.A close Abenaki (Penobscot) relative wrote acouple of days ago from=
the reservation setting:
"The snow is incredibly deep.Linda or I will venture with shovels quite soo=
n. The Island still plows out itselders; they just finished here at nearly =
12:00 noon. Truly amazing,cousin=E2=80=9D.-- George
The primary purpose of this is totender an extremely well done blog postfro=
m an old and good friend, Susan Klopfer, a quite able writer with astrong a=
nd consistent focus on human rights issues.She likes a piece I recently cir=
culated andhas carried it out to the Four Directions.More on this further d=

She also likes my book, JacksonMississippi, and the very first review of th=
e quite recent edition was done byher quite soon after its public appearanc=
e at the end of 2011. She gives it avery good plug in her blog post.Almosta=
ll people who have encountered my book like it much =E2=80=93 as most peopl=
e likeme.But, for what are obviously prettyself-serving reasons, there are =
those people and forces who don=E2=80=99t like eitherof us.
I am quite sympathetically interestedin the criticisms of the film, Selma.I=
was directly recruited into the Southern Civil Rights Movement, very early =
inthe fall term of 1961, at Tougaloo =E2=80=93 by the admirable activist, M=
s. ColiaLiddell (Colia Liddell Lafayette Clark), then a student of mine and=
always afine friend right to the present.Nottoo long thereafter, Colia and=
herhusband, Bernard Lafayette, were in another =E2=80=9Cfrontier=E2=80=9D =
=E2=80=93 Selma, DallasCounty =E2=80=93 where they did a great deal of the =
initial organizing.Much of this indeedhas been deliberately omitted from th=
e film.
I do know something about garbledrevisionism of Movement history.In theJack=
son Mississippi situation, it=E2=80=99s now considered quite OK by the=E2=
=80=9Cestablishment forces=E2=80=9D to center narrowly on the violently att=
acked Woolworthsit-in =E2=80=93 blaming that on young people while ignoring=
the roles of adult racistmentorsand the basic systemicorigins.It=E2=80=99s=
considered OK to elevatethe very courageous Medgar Evers into sainthood =
=E2=80=93 an unrealistic status andsomething I think honest Medgar would ca=
tegorically reject =E2=80=93 and ignore thegreat courage of thousands of gr=
assroots African Americans and their too-few non-blackallies who comprised =
the Jackson Movement and its many highly dramatic episodes-- and who were s=
ubjected to the most brutal and bloody repression found in anylarge urban a=
rea during the great Movement epoch.
The 50th Anniversary ofthe historic Jackson Movement, conducted and skillfu=
lly managed in 2013 andlimited to the foregoing two dimensions, was one of =
the most blatant examplesof sanitizing revisionism in contemporary depictio=
ns of civil rights history inthis country.
Although the primary organizer of theJackson Movement and, along with other=
s,the target of much violence by police and vigilantes, I was not invitedto=
come to Jackson to provide my thoroughly informed and very graphic awarene=
ssof that great struggle.=20
=E2=80=9CLate in the day,=E2=80=9Dfast approaching the ostensible celebrati=
onsof the Jackson Movement in June 2013, when only a tiny number of veteran=
sof the Jackson Sit-In could be found, I wasoffered a chance to come and st=
and on the sidewalk by Capitol Street, obviouslyas a symbol with no opportu=
nity to sayanything of length =E2=80=93 that chance was never proffered -- =
at the limitedcommemoration of the Woolworth event which =E2=80=9Drepresent=
ed=E2=80=9D the JacksonMovement.I declined politely on thegrounds that my e=
xtremely limited role as a Woolworth prop would only serve tosignificantly =
minimizethe nature andscope and historic importance of the great Jackson Mo=
vement.
=E2=80=9CWhen I do come to Jackson,=E2=80=9D I toldseveral people at that t=
ime, =E2=80=9Cit will be do discuss the Jackson Movement, itsexternal and i=
nternal dimensions, in all of their glory and horror.=E2=80=9D
Not long ago, I conventionally posteda piece,
RICH MEMORIES OF SOME VERY GOOD PEOPLE AND WORTHY BATTLES.
Basically, it involves some selected personal reminiscence of significant a=
ctivist dimensions of mine and those close to me, spanning both my home sta=
te of Arizona ( or, as I Iike to put it, Northern Arizona), and northern Wi=
sconsin.The time is the late 1950s and the bare beginning of the 1960s.
Those who actually read the piece, liked it much.Family members also learne=
d a few things about the origin of Eldri=E2=80=99s and my now large and eve=
r growing Clan.
Oldest son, John, wrote succinctly:=E2=80=9CThanks for all this fascinating=
information. Much of it is brand new to me. Cool stuff.=E2=80=9D

n more about you and our family whenever you write. And the timing was inte=
resting; I've been thinking a lot about you and mom and the early 1960s as =
I've been going through these newspaper archives, and finding stories and p=

Susan Klopfer has taken my piece and run it in her fine blog precisely as I=
have written it =E2=80=93 but she has placed it in an extremely attractive=
format with a photo of myself and one of Eldri.She has also changed the ti=
tle to reflect my explicit strain of optimism when it comes, despite the =
=E2=80=9Ctrials and tribulations=E2=80=9D, for humanity and all life forms =
everywhere and the meaning of it all.
I am not a pure materialist by any long shot.I see the Universe and the Cos=
mos as two dimensional =E2=80=93 =E2=80=9Cthings seen=E2=80=9D and =E2=80=
=9Cthings unseen=E2=80=9D =E2=80=93 and I see it all as friendly with most =
people, for example, being Good (at least most of the time.) Sometimes, of =
course, you have to climb a ways up the mountain to feel the Sun, but it=E2=
=80=99s a trek always very well worth it.
