OUR PERSONAL AND WARM RECOLLECTION OF OUR LONGASSOCIATION WITH THE LATE ANN=
E MOODY =E2=80=93 GIFTED MISSISSIPPI ACTIVIST AND WRITER-- (HUNTER GRAY/JOH=
N R SALTER, JR/ HUNTER BEAR). THISIS FOR THE =E2=80=9CIN MEMORY=E2=80=9D SE=
CTION OF CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT VETERANS, AND FOROTHERS.

I and my good spouse, Eldri, knewAnne Moody from the point that we and Anne=
arrived at Tougaloo SouthernChristian College in late summer, 1961, myself=
as a professor and she as astudent. We were in contact with herfrom about t=
hat point until late summer , 1994.=20
She was a fine student of mine in anumber of courses, and became a close fr=
iend of Eldri and myself.Passionately committed to social justice,Anne was =
a strong supporter of our Jackson civil rights movement which began veryact=
ively in latter 1962 as the economic boycott of the downtown Jackson area a=
nd whichfeathered out into our massive Jackson Movement in the spring of 19=
63.Her role in our historic Woolworth Sit-In atJackson Mississippi on May 2=
8, 1963, is very well known. After the activedemonstration phase of the Jac=
kson Movement, she lent her valuable efforts as aCORE representative in oth=
er most challenging Magnolia situations.

Her fine writing abilities are verywell exemplified in her classic work, Co=
ming of Age in Mississippi, and in a numberof other pieces.

In addition to being a very goodfriend, she was also, as a great many of my=
students and former students oftenare, an advisee of mine, and I her advoc=
ate, at many points. ( From that perspective,I am ethically constrained fro=
m discussing any details in any personal challengesshe may have faced.I mai=
ntainconfidences. There is no chronologicalstatute of limitations for me on =
those.)
But I will broadly mention twomatters. If Anne often distrusted somecompone=
nts of government, she was an essentially trusting person when it cameto hu=
man beings. In almost all of thosecases, that trust was eminently justified.
But not all.In 1991, she was significantly enmeshed =E2=80=93through no fau=
lt of her own =E2=80=93- in a bureaucratic/medical situation in New YorkCit=
y where she resided. She was able to contact me.I extricated herfrom that m=
ess pronto.
In the earlier part of 1994, and not of hermaking,"something" tangibly occu=
rred in which she had very good reason to fear for her personal liberty in =
New YorkCity.A faithful neighbor of hers, anelderly Jewish man, worked with=
me ( I was in North Dakota) to put her on afast track to our university to=
wn ofGrand Forks in that rather remote state. For about three months, in the=
spring of 1994, she and her son, Sasha, lived in a motel quite nearour home=
. Weassisted her in a number of ways, as we had on earlier occasions, and c=
ontinuedthat for a time into the summer after she and Sasha moved on back E=
ast andcontact with other writers. Then, we lost touch with her.
Her book, Coming of Age inMississippi, guarantees her immortality. But more =
than that, we shall always remember a brave and plucky andcommitted human b=
eing who, despite themany and various vicissitudes, continued toward the Su=
n.
