A few thoughts for RBBers and others.
Idaho is having one of its threewarmest winters since the keeping of record=
s in the late 19thcentury.Hereabouts, it has been earlyspring for weeks.A f=
ew days ago,weather folks warned us that a relative cold spell was coming a=
nd highs mightonly reach 40 above, with a bit of snow. Then they decided th=
at would last onlya day.It can, I should add, get winteryrough around here =
but nothing in that vein lasts very long at all.
As I have mentioned a number oftimes, this setting =E2=80=93 right where we=
are and the immediate environs =E2=80=93 were thewintering grounds of the =
Mohawk (and some St Francis Abenaki) fur hunters fromthe Northeast =E2=80=
=93 who began to come into this region as fur trappers (mostlybeaver) under=
the aegis of the Hudson=E2=80=99s Bay Company in the very late 1700s. Inti=
me and due course, their leader became our direct ancestor, John Gray, St R=
egis Mohawk and a fighter for Nativerights against the fur companies, and a=
nother direct ancestor,Joseph Annance, Abenaki, was part of thathardy band.=
Initially, they wereoccasionally in the Blue Mountains of eastern Oregon, a=
s well as in westernMontana where they got along well with the Salish/Koote=
nai/Flathead people(these tribes closely related to each other; the Flathea=
ds did NOT have flatheads. We have very distant cousins among the Flathead =
but don=E2=80=99t know thempersonally.)
Eventually, while keeping their handpartly in Montana, the Gray band people=
focused most of their trapping in theTeton and Teton Basin country of nort=
hwestern Wyoming and adjoining easternIdaho.They summered in the high count=
ryand wintered around here.Gray=E2=80=99s Holeand Gray=E2=80=99s Lake (a na=
tional wildlife refuge) are in extreme eastern Idaho andJohn Gray=E2=80=99s=
River, a small stream, is in extreme western Wyoming.
The Native trappers from theNortheast got on well with almost all of the re=
gional Indian nations.But when they broke with the HBC and, as freetrappers=
, related cautiously to the American fur companies, they did incurhostility=
from the Blackfeet who were aligned with the Brits =E2=80=93 and there wer=
e afew violent conflicts.
In establishing their winter camps inthis immediate area, they chose wisely=
=E2=80=93 as did our family in coming herealmost eighteen years ago.
Aware of the forthcoming incursionsof the Euro-Americans, the NortheasternN=
ative trappers, especially the Mohawks, duly warned tribes such as theSalis=
h/Kootenai/Flathead =E2=80=93 and suggested that they consider Jesuit missi=
onariesas effective advocates.The traditionalJesuit relations with Natives =
involved the recognition that an Indian tribe, inaddition to being a nation=
, is also one big family =E2=80=93 and the Jesuits, ofcourse, strongly supp=
orted families.They also supported the concept of the communal land base an=
d itspreservation.And despite the far awayobjections of Vatican purists, th=
e Jesuits were open to syncretic approaches inreligion =E2=80=93 the blendi=
ng of tribal beliefs with Catholicism.
There was regional Native interest inthis.As a result, a delegation ofMohaw=
ks and Flatheads junketed from the western mountains to St Louis torequest =
priests.In due course, theincreasingly well known advocate for Natives, Fr.=
Peter Jean de Smet, as wellas the fine artist, Nicolas Point, and other cl=
ergy arrived at FrenchSettlement (now Kansas City) and their basic guide in=
to the Far IntermountainWest-- and a generally positivereception by most tr=
ibes out here =E2=80=93 was John Gray who was also their principal hunter.
The measles scare strikes me asstrange.In my day, it was one of themaladies=
that kids expected to get and briefly suffer through, along withWhooping C=
ough, Chicken Pox, and Mumps =E2=80=93 coupled with problematic schoolprinc=
ipals and teachers.I had all ofthose, save Mumps (which my two younger brot=
hers got) =E2=80=93 and, at five, I alsohad Scarlet Fever from which I almo=
st died.I was the only known case of that in our general area and its origi=
nremains a mystery.
We have nothing at all againstvoluntary vaccinations and our family members=
have undergone those things foragesin many settings and situations =E2=80=
=93with one exception: flu shots. Some of us stay away from those.In 1976, =
an older friend of ours had his flushot, suffered spinal damage, which beca=
me much more permanently seriousfollowing a botched operation.
I don=E2=80=99t think anyone should be forcedinto vaccinations.If people ha=
veobjections =E2=80=93 say, regarding their kids =E2=80=93 then I think the=
children should stayhome, even be made to stay home, from school and other=
public places untilwhatever epidemic has passed.
It=E2=80=99s an interesting issue.
It strikes me that CNN, especiallyWolf Blitzer, has now exceeded Fox as the=
principal warmongering U.S. cablestation.Back with the Games, itconsistent=
ly ridiculed Putin, though that faded quickly. But it does incessantlybeat =
the drums against Russia and, of course, its heavy tilt toward Israel hasbe=
en consistently obvious.It also getscarried away on the very real terrorism=
challenges.In the wake of the recent Paris tragedy,Blitzer entertained the=
strong possibility of a concerted attack on Jewsgenerally.This was replace=
d by much onthe alleged presence of ISIS cells throughout most of Europe =
=E2=80=93 and then allegedly prevalentwithin the United States.CNN is alsoi=
ncreasingly prone to focus on a single favorite topic of theirs =E2=80=93 e=
.g., terrorismand airline disasters -- for days and weeks on end, to the ex=
clusion of muchother national and global news.
Jesus!This is driving me back to MSNBC.
