The combined effects of capital mobility and automation decimated the indus=
trial unions. The same now seems to threaten the public sector unions, with=
their high percentage of workers with at least some post-secondary educati=
on. Protest activity has largely moved from concentrated action at the poin=
t of production to much less threatening sporadic demonstrations in public =
spaces.

What if AI and robotics have a net catastrophic effect on jobs, as many pre=
dict? Will the class struggle than shift even more decisively from the work=
place to the streets =C2=A0- over, for example, demands for a higher guaran=
teed annual income paid for by higher wealth taxes? If this does become the=
new locus of class struggle, it will most certainly bring to the fore the =
question Hari poses of "how effectively an on-going apparatus can be built=

Whether such initial struggles for reform ultimately move in a revolutionar=
y direction will depend, as always, on whether the ruling class is wiling o=
r able to meet the fundamental needs of an increasingly desperate populatio=
n.
