Michael Kowalski asked me what I think we should do. (Note: In typical
fashion, Anthony Teso looks for an excuse to take me to task, in this case
for not answering Michael. I get the emails in a daily compilation, and I'm
just getting Michael's question now. Not everybody reads and replies to
every email immediately!)

Michael's question is the question of the day, and what I think we should
do in part depends on who and where we are, but at the very least I think
we should start by sounding the alarm and explaining what is at stake.
Yesterday, two very nice young DSA members came to my door. They were
campaigning for a DSA member who is running for Oakland city council. We
got into a conversation in which, among other things, I said that I thought
this candidate should be raising this issue and using his campaign to try
to build a working class-based resistance starting here in Oakland. What
emerged was very interesting: These two dedicated DSA'ers really had little
understanding of what I was talking about. When I mentioned how Trump was
planning on using ICE to suppress the vote and the issue of democratic
rights in general, all they could think of was ICE deporting immigrants. In
other words, they really didn't see the whole issue of democratic rights
("bourgeois democracy:) in general.

I plan to try to raise the issue in my chapter of DSA to the extent and the
way that I can, but frankly I am not very optimistic. Overall, I think I
was pretty clear in my article about what I think we can and should do,
though. For those in unions, I think they should raise the issue there and
call for their union to organize public meetings to build a working class
resistance. That would necessarily entail working to build opposition
caucuses within the union. I know that that is tough going at this point,
but I think we have to try. I think a similar approach would be appropriate
inside DSA, knowing that it is even tougher going there. Anybody who is
