Mark Lause questions whether discussing the objective situation is taboo in
DSA. I probably put it too strongly when I used that word. It only appears
to be taboo but there is a general lack of interest. I've found that in
meetings, in the communications of the National Political Committee and the
various caucuses and in discussions with individual members themselves.

Marv Gandall comments that maybe my expectations are unrealistic because
DSA is not a "democratic centralist" organization. We don't have to be in
such a group to have a healthy interest in what is actually happening
around us. It's called simple curiosity. Nor is it a matter of keeping on
"educating the membership". Teaching is not like how a bird feeds its
young, which it does by pumping fully digested food down its young's
throat. Teaching involves struggling to understand reality together. It's
not like some teach and others learn, the two are integrally part of the
same process for all of us. yes, some have more knowledge than others, but
that doesn't mean they preach and others listen.
