Firefighters work to extinguish brush fires at Great Kills Park

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Hundreds of FDNY officials continue to battle two  
raging brush fires in Great Kills Park.
The fire went to a fourth-alarm at about 3:50 p.m., according to emergency  
radio transmissions, as a large number of Fire Department vehicles -- some  
arriving from other boroughs -- continue to race to the scene. The fires 
are  jumping due to strong winds and dry conditions. 
 


 
 
 


 








At one point, a unit was trapped between two patches of fire, but escaped  
without harm, according to transmissions and a source at the scene. 
Helicopters are hovering over the park, helping drop water on the  fires.
One blaze was initially reported near the model airplane field. A second,  
separate fire was reported near Hylan Boulevard, according to transmissions. 
 
City officials caution there may be traffic delays on Hylan Boulevard in  
Great Kills as a result of the emergency response.
The two fires are part of a rash of blazes that broke out on the borough 
this  afternoon.

Firefighters continue to battle a three-alarm brush fire deep  in a wooded 
area behind Ilyssa Way in Arden Heights. 
As of 4:50 p.m., a Fire Department spokesman had not heard any reports of  
injuries or structural damage at either brush fire.
Also this afternoon, firefighters were called to 15 Brower Court, in Great  
Kills, where a fire was reported on the third floor of a three-story 
building.  Officials have brought that blaze under control. 
A woman, child and dog fled the building, according to the owner of a 
nearby  business. They were not seriously injured. 
"We actually saw all the particles flying," said Anthony Berardi, who owns  
Headliners Barbershop a few doors down. "Then we smelled it and saw the 
house on  fire. We ran down there and kicked the door in. We got the dog, the 
baby and the  woman out of the house."
According to Capt. John Dunne, of the Uniformed Fire Officers Association,  
Engine 161/Ladder 81 from South Beach was upon the first to arrive to each 
of  the three blazes. 
"These are the situations we warn about," he said. "You don't close 
companies  on Staten Island. [Today] there are companies coming from Manhattan and 
deep in  Brooklyn, responding to Staten Island."
