Wisconsin Prosecutor Formally Requests Re-Opening of Lawsuit Against Anti-Union Law

Last week we heard that Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne was considering asking the Wisconsin Supreme Court to re-hear a case against violations of the open meeting requirements in the state’s anti-union law. The case, which the state Supreme Court threw out in a 4-3 ruling, included the participation of Michael Gableman, the Supreme Court justice who received thousands of dollars in free legal services from a high-powered conservative law firm in the state which frequently works on cases before the Court (in a fitting twist, Gableman secured the law firm’s services to defend him in an ethics case). In fact, Michael Best & Friedrich, the law firm in question, worked for the state and Walker’s administration in the case of the anti-union law. Gableman never recused himself from the case, and provided the deciding vote, overturning the ruling from a Dane County district court judge.
Yesterday, Ozanne formally requested the re-opening of the case, arguing that Gableman’s participation represented a conflict of interest.

…comes from Glenn Greenwald. I’ve always admired Greenwald; however, I found myself cheering in agreement as I read his latest article, “Progressives and the Ron Paul fallacies”. He suggests that voters will have to decide for themselves on the lesser of evils (as usual). In doing so Greenwald pushes to the surface the numerous actions Obama has taken that goes directly against what self-righteous progressives are all about. The thing I loathe most about election season is reflected in the central fallacy that drives progressive discussion the minute “Ron Paul” is mentioned. As soon as his candidacy is discussed, progressives will reflexively point to a slew of positions he holds that are anathema to liberalism and odious in their own right and then say: how can you support someone who holds this awful, destructive position? The premise here — the game that’s being played — is that if you can identify some heinous views that a certain candidate holds, then it means they are beyond the pale, that no Decent Person should even consider praising any part of their candidacy.

A recent Freedom of Information Act request has revealed that the FBI wants what it calls “food activists” prosecuted as terrorists, perhaps because nothing could more terrifying than exposing where our so-called food comes from and how it is manufactured.
Most Americans don’t really care where their food comes from or how it is made. All that matters is that it’s cheap and tastes good. Unfortunately for the food industry, not everyone is that stupid anymore. There is a growing desire to eat food that is healthy and produced in a cruel-free, sustainable way, stemming in part from the efforts of the food activists who have revealed the brutal, unnatural way our food is manufactured.
Thus, the FBI wants them classified as terrorists.
Unflipping believable.
But do try to understand where the food you eat comes from.
Local, seasonal, and sustainable are three key words.
There are many coops around the country that will do their best to find more naturally processed food than you can generally get in a supermarket.
Vote with your wallets. Yes, the food at these places and other health food stores will be more expensive; you can almost bet on that. But in the long run, such food may be much better for you, and that goes a long way toward your long-term health.

None of the key terms in section 1021 are defined to constrain the president’s power to disappear Americans into dungeons at Guantanamo Bay or elsewhere. “Al Qaeda” is undefined. “The Taliban” is undefined. “Associated forces” is undefined. “Coalition partners” is undefined. “Substantially supporting” is undefined. The words can mean whatever the president, like Humpty Dumpty, wants them to mean.
It is really that last bit of this legislation that scares the stuffing out of me.

Speaking at a meeting of top Israeli ambassadors in Jerusalem, Mossad chief Tamir Pardo rejected the notion that Iran, even if they were nuclear armed, constituted an “existential threat,” saying the term is being used “too freely.”
Did someone just "blink" regarding Iran?
Or was the Israeli government's war gaming indicating such a terrible ultimate loss (if Russia and China come into the conflict on Iran's side) that a consensus has been reached by the Israeli government,their military, and their intelligence community, concluding that a military strike against Iran just isn't worth it?!?
We will never know, but I feel just more than slightly encouraged that Mossad Chief Pardo made such a statement.

Iran Nuclear Program: Country Proposes New Nuclear Talks With World Powers

Iran has proposed a new round of talks about its controversial nuclear program with the six world powers, the country's top nuclear negotiator said Saturday.
Saeed Jalili said he has formally called on the six powers – the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany – to return to the negotiating table with Iran.
The invitation comes in the wake of new sanctions recently imposed by the West over Tehran's uranium enrichment program, which is a potential pathway to making nuclear arms.
The last round of negotiations between Iran and the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany in January in Istanbul, Turkey, ended in failure.
There is nothing "controversial" about building a power plant, which is precisely what Russian technical help is assisting them in doing.
Let us hope that this round of negotiations is successful; but with Israel's intransigence, and the US under Tel Aviv's control when it comes to foreign policy, I won't hold my breath that it will be.

Iran delays Gulf of Hormuz missile test

Iran said it had delayed promised long-range missile tests in the Gulf on Saturday and signaled it was ready for fresh talks with the West on its disputed nuclear program.
Iran’s state media initially reported early on Saturday that long-range missiles had been launched during naval exercises, a move likely to irk the West, which is concerned over threats by Tehran to close off a vital oil shipping route in the Gulf.
But Deputy Navy Commander Mahmoud Mousavi later went on the English language Press TV channel to deny the missiles had in fact been fired: “The exercise of launching missiles will be carried out in the coming days.”
There appears to be some back-channel communication going on here between the West and Iran, to which we are not privy at this time: we will have to wait to see how things unfold.
Hopefully, saner heads in Tel Aviv, Tehran, and DC will prevail, and all issues can be dealt with through negotiation.
But unfortunately, the really "wild card" in all this is the Israeli government, which wants the US to "neutralize" it's "existential threat", Iran (with American blood and money, of course).

If you have kids and skills, please consider getting out this country while you can; your window for such an escape is rapidly closing.
If you cannot do that, for whatever reason, please consider home-schooling your child. Home schooled kids generally fare better at the SAT tests.
Yes, even ivy league universities like Harvard and Yale accept homeschoolers. Mostly you would have the same admissions requirements as public schoolers: tests, applications, essays, interviews, ets. The only thing different would be how you submit your work in homeschool. That's why it pays to keep good records. Most will accept transcripts prepared by parents, or portfolios of work. I have known quite a few homeschooled kids who went to college, my daughter included. Most of them around here start out early in dual enrollment classes part-time. My daughter did that from age 15, by the time she was 17 she took her SAT and had about 50 college credits under her belt, so colleges were contacting her. She ended up going to university as a transfer student with a full scholarship.

Opposition groups sign deal on post-Assad Syria

Two leading Syrian opposition parties have agreed a road map to democracy if mass protests succeed in toppling President Bashar al-Assad, according to a copy of the document seen by Reuters.
The leading opposition group in exile, the Syrian National Council (SNC), signed the deal with the National Coordination Committee, a group whose majority is inside Syria and which had disagreed with the SNC's calls for foreign intervention.
Under their pact, the two sides "reject any military intervention that harms the sovereignty or stability of the country, without considering Arab intervention to be foreign.
This opens thedoor for an invasion of Syria, staged from Turkey. Turkey's foreign minister Davlutoglu, has publicly stated that Turkey doesn't want war, but is "...ready for any scenario."
If Syria does not stop its crackdown against protesters, Turkey’s foreign minister said on Tuesday that Ankara will be ready for the possibility of military intervention.

Tasco to retire, but only for a day

Councilwoman Marian B. Tasco is retiring Friday, but only so she can collect a $478,057 pension check and return to work Monday, when she will be sworn in for her seventh term.
Tasco was one of six Council members to enroll in the city’s controversial Deferred Retirement Option Plan, better known as DROP. She did not immediately return a request for comment.
Plan participants trade a lower lifetime pension for a large one-time lump sum payment, but they are supposed to retire when they get that check.
Several elected officials, however, exercised a right approved by two city solicitors to run for election, retire for a day, collect their DROP payments, and return to work.
