Rather than going over to St John, consider going straight south and catch the Ferry to Tiverton on Long Island and doing a Whale watch tour. They go out in Lobster boats and have a chance to let the Humpback whales come up close to the boat. You can continue a little further south and stay in Westport on Brier Island at the hostel there. If you pass that way, you can also stop and see Balancing Rock on Long Island which is a local spot people go to see.
