I have been using Kodak cameras lately. My latest is a Z981 which is not so 
small but full of features, manual overrides and AA rechargeable batteries. 
Without the 4 batteries it is very light. It has 24X optical zoom, 14MPs, has a 
viewfinder switchable to LCD screen and SDHC card for easy connection to a 
computer. I have used several of the Kodaks that I got for $50 on craigslist 
with some of the same characteristics. Other models I've used are the Z650 & 
Z8612 IS. The only downside is the shutter lag. Everything else has been 
wonderful for touring shots. I have a link of pics from these cameras below. The 
latest Z981 I paid $140. More than the other two but the wider lens capability 
and higher megapixels pushed me to upgrade.

   I bought a used Canon PowerShot A570is and it's a real workhorse with a good 
reputation for long life. It not only shoots stills but also video. It's an easy 
USB download into most any computer without a special driver plus it uses an SD 
card which can be pulled and inserted into a slot in a computer or taken to 
Walgreen's or Wal*Mart for printing. There are a lot of Canons using the name of 
PowerShot, some better and some with fewer features.
   I just checked eBay and there are lots of them starting from $1.00 bid and 
up. I paid $50 for mine including shipping.
   If I was going to a camera using AA batteries, I'd go with a set of the new 
NiZn batteries which last twice as long as Alkaline and four times as long as 
other rechargeable. They started out rather expensive but the price has come 
down to where you can buy a charger with four batteries for around $15. You 
would still have a camera that you can find batteries for just about anywhere if 
you got caught with dead ones.
   Here's a little video I shot the other morning with mine under less than 
ideal conditions for light and contrast. The still at the end was also shot with 
it.
