This is a great discussion, and thanks for all the responses. It sounds like there are a lot of AA cameras out there, but few if any AAA because battery life isn't worth the size. Used seems to be the way to go in my situation to get significantly lower prices. I'm enticed by waterproofness, though I've had bad luck with Kodak in the past. I've only used their low-end models, but the image quality was very poor. Regardless of brand, I like to find some sample pictures (NOT from the manufacturer, really best to just snoop around on flickr and smugmug to find samples). I've considered truly waterproof video cameras before (Contour and GoPro) but I don't think any currently have a screen, and the costs are up there. Hopefully in a few years these can be cheaper though.
