"Cyclists matter in the Netherlands". That pretty much sums it up.

It has been my experience that, generally speaking, bicycles in America are
still viewed as little more than toys that children play with in the
suburban cul-de-sac until they are old enough to buy a car. I do believe
this perception is slowly changing and cities like Portland, OR are evidence
of that. Sadly, America has a deeply ingrained car culture (and bigger is
better) that will take generations to change. Perhaps $5.00 a gallon gas
will provide the necessary incentive?
