When I was in Green Bank , WV this past summer I visited the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. An amazing place. They have what I would call satellites dishes but they call them telescopes. One follows the sun 24/7 because flare ups ruin their studies so they keep an eye on them. One of the telescopes is 2 acres in size and you can get with in 100 feet of it. If you are interested you can see them at www.nroa.com .

Fran,

Be who you are and say what you feel........
Because those that matter dont mind.....
And those that mind don't matter. Anon

*LOS ANGELES (CBS) — *The sun is making a comeback.
OK, so it never really went away, but after years of relative quiet on our
earest star, activity has picked up as of late, resulting in a solar flare
hat marks the strongest since 2006.
Bob Rutledge, lead forecaster with the National Space Weather Prediction
enter, tells *KFWB’s Michael Shappee* these solar outbursts have the
otential to wreak havoc with earthly communications.
After the initial blast of radiation accompanying the coronal mass ejection
CME) — the first of its magnitude to occur in the new solar cycle of
ctivity — a huge cloud of charged particles is headed toward Earth and is
xpected likely to arrive on Feb. 17-18.
Among the many potential disasters that can come from a massive CME:
isturbances in the planet’s geomagnetic field that may lead to
alfunctioning telecom and GPS satellite equipment.
While forecasters predict no major impact on our telecommunications
nfrastructure, scientists have pointed out the sun is now ramping up ahead
f an expected solar maximum around 2013.
