I find a digital voice recorder much more easy to use, quick to the hand 
when something memorable happens, and fun to transcribe.  It is much 
more spontaneous than writing.  They can record hours and hours of talk 
on a couple of AAA batteries.  Kinda like having a camera at the ready.
