Yes Peter, I think you're right and maybe I was reacting a little too harshly. It certainly is an emotional subject that easily lends itself to knee-jerk reactions. Life would be easier if everything could be pigeon-holed. What if a cyclist causes the accident by blindly pulling out into traffic and gets run down because the motorist couldn't stop thier vehicle in time. As an avid cyclist, but also one who has made a living driving I see both sides of the issue. > > I agree that in some parts of the country the penalties for drunk driving, causing harm to others as a result, accidents involving motor vehicles etc, that penalties may not be equal to the crime, but it's not up to us to draw a blank conclusion the the motorist is always in the wrong and should be punished, If you want stronger laws, fight for them. Unfortunately with politics being what it is nowadays and our legislative bodies being guided by big money lobbyists, it's not easy to make changes, but we haveto start somewhere. > > Best regards, > Peter > ~~~~~ > > Peter W. If any accident involving an automobile results in the death of another person, the person at fault should be charged with a felony. A felon can no longer vote or own a gun and probably some other things. I think the level of punishment should be determined by a judge. > On Feb 17, 2011, at 11:14 AM, Joe DeLory wrote: > > > Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2011 10:11:36 -0500 > > From: Miles Whelen <[email protected]> > > Subject: Re: Penalty for killing bicyclist inadequate > > I see your point. We see it all too often in the police and court reports. "So-and-so was arrested for drinken or reckless driving, he/she was also cited for driving on a suspended or revoked license. Now there is no indication that this driver was a habitual offender. But for those that are, getting behind the wheel should be classified as "brandishing a deadly weapon" and the weapon should be forfeited. > > Joe > > _______________________________________________ > > Touring mailing list > > [email protected] > > Browse and search the archives: http://search.bikelist.org > > Unsubscribe or list settings: > > http://www.phred.org/mailman/options/touring > > > > Harold Bielstein > [email protected] > Laissez Faire Capitalism: Its only a theory! > > _______________________________________________ > Touring mailing list > [email protected] > Browse and search the archives: http://search.bikelist.org > Unsubscribe or list settings: > http://www.phred.org/mailman/options/touring Harold Bielstein [email protected] Laissez Faire Capitalism: Its only a theory!
