REI seems to have a great deal of variation from store to store in bicycle
service & knowledge.  There's one close to me where several friends have
bought various touring models, including the Safari, and been satisfied with
the service.  The bike service guy has been there for at least 10 years.
OTH, my brother bought a Safari from the REI closest to him.  He loved the
trekking bars but needed to get them higher.  REI could not figure it out &
told him "that's the way it is."  He took it to his LBS and they fixed him
up with an extender that raised the bars & of course then needed to lengthen
cables, etc.  Not sure of the cost but he didn't complain, was just
disappointed that REI couldn't even come up with a solution.  

So Fran that's a good REI that took care of you so well.

I don't consider REI a bike shop but in a way I guess it is. I bought a
Novera Safari there or rather on line when they closed the disc brake model
out in October. They shipped it to my house and I assembled what needed to
be assembled. I was going to take it with me to ride the Cheif Ladiga Trail
in Alabama and wanted it to be perfect. It wasn't. I had to lean over too
far and the cranks were so long I think a 185 and the frame is a small. Much
too long for my legs.I asked why they would use such long cranks on a small
frame. He told me they just use whats laying around.  REI is 100 miles from
me but I needed to see if they could help me with those things as I was
going to be gone awhile and wanted it as near perfect as I could have it. I
got lucky and the fellow who was there had worked on bikes years and had all
the experience needed to fix it. He was suprised they shipped it to my house
as he said they should have sent it to the store for assembly. News to me.
Then he cha
 nged out the stem and handlebars, longer cables, changed out the crankset
from another bike,fit it to me,checked out both wheels for trueness, then
rode it around the parking lot and I did the same. After about 4+ hours I
was ready to take it home. No charge!! I was amazed. I just wish I lived
closer so I could take advantage of their services.

one might surmise that if they thought they could move Item X easily
nd had consistent demand for it, they might have it in stock. My
ersonal experience has been that the LBS that I use can get me most
hings in one or two days if I really need it that quickly. Most
hings that I actually DO need quickly, they have in stock.
In your situation, had I been the shop, I would have pulled a set off
f a floor model bike and ordered replacements in.
