Me (slightly younger) says:

 

Of course I´ve used a cog board (and did see one at my LBS as late as x-mas,
he is still using it!), but I´ve also found the perfect gearing; it does
exist. Nowadays I may use 40-36 front and 14-17-21-26-32 rear which gives me
10 evenly spaced perfectly usable gears almost anywhere. It´s called
half-step. Those of you old enough; the other hand up! Gearing is 77 to 30.
Low? I´ve read that Eddy Merckx mostly used 100,4 in competition. I don´t
need more than 77% of Eddy´s! I admit using 45-41 front with same rear on my
go-fast bike and 38-33 with 14-18-23-30-38 on my camping bike. 

 

Works fine and is enough.
