This is not meant to razz our recumbent colleagues. It is just a personal experience that I had. My worst touring bike was a BikeE RX recumbent. I used it for a tour of approx. 700 miles (1100km). The bike was later stolen - poor sap! The BikeE was fine for casual riding, along a rail trail or along the beach. It was not the greatest touring bike. It was terribly slow, even slower than me. It could not climb worth a darn, even worse than me. I am not referring to double digit grades here. Just simple little rises now and then. Also, the bike did not accept a mid-ship rack, and all the weight was on the rear end. That made the front tire rather sloppy whenever I hit a soft patch. Did I mention that it was slow? Did I mention that it could not climb?
