Contrary to popular belief, most mountain bikers really go out of their way to avoid muddy trails. Riding when you are leaving marks in the trail is a good way to ruin the trail. 

FYI, on the bike of mine that sees the worst conditions, I got about 2500 miles out of a 10 speed chain and rear cogset before they both needed replacing. I'm a big believer in the quality of rock-n-roll lube extreme lube as well.
