Roger, If you have been pressing it against walls as described earlier, it could well be broken. It is basically a stepper motor that winds the shaft in and out under control of the ecu and is rather sensitive to abuse. If you let the ecu wind it out when it is not constrained by the housing the shaft will fall off the end and you will be able to see how it works more easily. Unfortunately they don't tend to work very well after this has happened. They tend to either work or not so it would seem to be unlikely that this is your problem, I would check the throttle body and cable carefully.
