Could you use a Magneto-Inductive sensor (aka electronic compass) to derive
direction of travel. If you know what direction you're travelling, and the
speed, it should be possible to get an accurate track map. I've seen digital
electronic compasses for as little as 30 quid; this includes a case, microchip
and digital display, so the sensor itself must be quite cheap.
