It shouldn't, you know. The system's pressurised (or should be) - it's only the overflow / reserve tank that's open to atmosphere. The pressure cap vents 'spare' fluid into the tank, and vacuum pulls it back in as the coolant cools & shrinks (as long as there are absolutely no air leaks anywhere and the bottom of the pipe stays covered). Genuinely atmospheric systems died off absolutely ages ago. Thirties? Forties? Fifties at the latest, at a wild guess.
