RE: Antifreeze

Ah!

Vic's car is the "open" style old ford system.  I assume!

The little overflow bottle needs to be half full, and the "pipe" needs to be
at least 3 quarters down the plastic tank.

The reason it needs to be this way is:

1. Engine warms - pushes first air and then water into tank, hence the need
for half - to leave some space to trap this excess.

2. Engine cools - As the coolant/air cools it contracts and in theory the
excess that was expelled is sucked back in via a siphon - hence the need to
have the pipe low in the tank.

This system is far from perfect and will always require near daily topping
up, especially in hot weather, or enthusiastic blatting.  By far the best
solution is to install a pressure tank (from a fiesta) and convert the
system to a pressurised one and forget about it.

I would not worry too much about it disappearing in to the oil/exhaust as
these a far less likely causes.
