        I agree with George.
  I love my truck and bought my enclosed trailer for about $3k.  Plus, there are such things as truck tents which are made to fit specifically over the bed of whatever truck you have....if you really need to sleep outdoors....or you can sleep in the trailer.

How long is your commute, and do you have a place to store a trailer? If
it's a long drive, I'd go with a capable car and small enclosed trailer.
Focus the vehicle on its primary use (commuting?), then adjust it toward
it's secondary use (bike hauling). As far as vans go, there are many
mini-vans out there that will haul a bike with low or no mirrors
comfortably, instead of a full-sized van. Remember that in a van the
fuel will be in the cabin with you - a minus in my book. Trucks are
great if you rarely carry many passengers, and can capably load and
cover your cargo. 2wd models get adequate fuel mileage so pass on the
4wd unless you see snow often.
Personally, I've used my 4wd truck (Maine, short commute) for the last
few years of hauling and just picked up a nice 5x8 Thule trailer for $3k
that'll store 3 bikes regularly and serve track duty in summer.
