To me it looks like a cross between a bug and an alien. I agree with the character comment - definitely not your generic crotch rocket. That's my only complaint about the newer gen - to me they look like a Yamaha FZ of some sort. I know they're different, but to the casual eye they have a lot in common. But NOTHING looks like a first-gen as far as I know. That's one of the reasons why I picked it over the other two I was shopping at the time - CBR600F4i and Ninja 900. That and the "cheap Ducati that doesn't break" vibe of the L-twin. I put about 1000 miles on a Duc in Tuscany in 2001 and while I loved the character, I didn't like the reputation they had for being a maintenance drag. Some day I'd like to figure out how to take a long trip on mine. Right now it's too much of a Painmobile (butt, hands) to do more than 100 fun miles or so. And I'm spoiled by my current long-distance ride - a 2003 BMW K1200RS (also kind of an odd looking bike, in its way...). It's a heavy pig at slow speeds, but incredibly solid and planted with this big, smooth, muscular push from almost any RPM. And electronic cruise control, hard bags, heated grips, etc. I already spent my $600+ on a custom seat on the Beemer, so it's hard to justify doing so for the SV. Sorry, didn't mean to hijack your thread (or wander off there). Back to the topic - while I wouldn't sink my investment capital into a garage full of them, I definitely expect the 1st gen SVS will find itself in the "Retrospective" pages in the back of Rider magazine in 20 years or so... - Bob On Mar 2, 2006, at 10:58 PM, Stan Potts wrote: >> >> The rounded half fairing is what makes the first generation S so >> desirable >> to me.
