If all you're carrying is a laptop or such, you don't need to get the
gawdawful-big 52-liter Givi; I have the 40-liter E360 on my SV, for when
it's the "commuter vehicle," and no problems.  It's not like the Givi
(esp. the Monokey line) isn't really, REALLY simple to pop off the bike
when you don't want it on there (and the rack alone is barely noticeable
- plus it gives you a great platform on which you can bungee stuff if
you need to). 

I don't like having my laptop, etc., in a backpack.  For one thing, I
usually am dragging around more junk than just the laptop itself, and I
really DON'T want to have it on my back in the event that I should
happen to go down.  Unless you've got a really well-padded (and
therefore BIG) case, it's pretty easy to break a laptop with a
relatively minor impact - something that you'd otherwise just stand up
and shake off.
