Jeez, all this talk of hitting deer is gonna make me a lot more alert for
critters when riding in the Santa Cruz mountains in future. Especially sinc=
e
I had my first minor critter encounter last nite on my ride home from work.
Tooling down 280 at ~70+ in moderate traffic just after dark and I saw the
car in front of me hit its breaks momentarily, then sorta shudder for a
second then the brake lights went out. What emerged from underneath the car
looked like a raccoon still tumbling from being hit by the car in front of
me. At the speed I was going there just wasn't time to avoid it so I merely
aimed for what looked like the skinniest part of the beast and stood up on
the pegs slightly (or at least started to before I hit it). Thankfully, I
bounced over the carcass without incident and kept right on going, but it
was still one hell of an adrenaline rush. I'm still not sure if it was a
raccoon or small dog or what.

Needless to say, that experience in juxtaposition with all these deer
stories has made me a lot more cirtter conscious. Just what I need. One mor=
e
road hazard to worry about...

Stan (what? me paranoid? it's just all those deer out to get me, that's
all...)
