Like almost all other portable receivers, the IC-R2's current consumption varies in proportion to the audio output. Therefore, it will place a variable load on the power supply. Do NOT use a low quality, unregulated power supply in place of the batteries. The output voltage of the supply would vary all over the place as you listen to the radio. A "3V DC" unregulated supply may produce 5 VDC or more output under light load.
