R2 Vs. R5

A friend bought an R5 instead of an R2. He's experiencing very poor front 
end performance with the R5, local signals flooding all across the bands. Is 
this typical with the R5? I remember the original R1 did the same thing. If 
there's a strong local UHF transmitter he's hearing it all over the UHF band 
on not just on the correct frequency. If this seems to be a glitch he's sending 
his in for a replacement. Anyone? Thanks - Ted
