use braid of coax as HF antenna

Say, can we just instead connect the SMA center connector to the braid
of the coax instead in this (HF) case?  Wait, I suppose that would
overload the R2 and we would need to engage the ATTenuator button.
What would we connect the ground of the SMA to here?
