Re: use braid of coax as HF antenna

if you mean connect the centre of the SMA connector to the braid of the coax 
AND the centre core that would be fine, HOWEVER you then wouldnt be able to 
use a sma connector OR bnc on the end of the coax bcus then you are shorting 
the centre to the earth and would get nothing.
