Hi,
In my experience the R2 certainly will receive lower than the 495khz limit 
with the aid of computer programming.
I have received atlantic 252 which is on 252khz very succesfully but an 
external aerial was used other than the stock aerial which comes with the R2.
The R2 will receive frequencies below 495khz but the sensitivity drops alot.
Using an external aerial will help to receive the frequencies below 495khz 
but don't expect anything spectacular below 146khz which is the lower band 
limit of long wave radio transmissions, below 146khz is when you get into 
what's called VLF frequencies (very low frequency) of which the R2 does not 
receive very well at all.
When using external aerials with the R2 you can gain alot but then you will 
also gain alot of signals coming in on frequencies that mirror each other on 
different frequencies because of the stronger signals breaking through the if 
stages due to the external aerial.
I suppose it's just a case of experimenting with external aerials but i have 
found that the R2 really isn't designed to receive very well below 495khz but 
it does try with the help of an external aerial.
The R2 also programs with computer software above 1309Mhz to 1599Mhz, i have 
posted quite some time ago to see if anyone has tested the R2 with some test 
gear to see if it does receive these frequencies above 1309Mhz but never had 
any replies.
Test gear at this range is not what alot of people have access to so that's 
probably why i got no replies.
Anyway the R2 is such a cool radio for the size,functions & price & it still 
beats alot of scanners on the market now for the same price by far.
